Bed bugs - a hotel's worst nightmare. They feed on blood, causing itchy bites that will irritate your guests. They can also cause other public health issues, so it's very important to pay close attention to your rooms.

Here are some helpful tips on how to find, prevent and control bed bugs!

How to Prevent Bed Bugs

Prevention is key. Taking these steps will help prolong the life of your rooms and the satisfaction of your guests. 

1. Consider scheduling regular bed bug inspections of all rooms and public areas by a pest management professional.
   
2. Train front desk, maintenance and housekeeping on bedbugs
3. Create a "Bed Bug Action Plan"
4. Housekeeping staff should inspect for evidence of bed bugs during every room service and maintenance staff should remove and check behind headboards and under box springs periodically. 
   
5. Consider enclosing mattresses and box springs with bed bug-proof encasements
6. Follow proper laundry handling practices to reduce the risk of spreading bed bugs (i.e. keep clean and dirty laundry separate, keep carts in hallways)
7. Eliminate bed bugs hiding places including peeling wallpaper and paint, cracks and holes, crevices around headboards and baseboards.
8. Vacuum rooms thoroughly including drapes, back side of pictures, underside of furniture, all known hiding spots for bed bugs!

How to Identify if You Have Bed Bugs

A more accurate way to identify a possible infestation is to look for physical signs of bed bugs. When cleaning and/or changing the sheets in your rooms, have your employees check for:

• Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed.
• Dark spots (about this size: •), which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would.
• Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
• Live bed bugs.

Bed bugs really love to hide:

• In the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains.
• In drawer joints.
• In electrical receptacles and appliances.
• Under loose wallpaper and wall hangings. 
• At the junction where the wall and the ceiling meet.
• Even in the head of a screw.

If a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug!
